Illinois construction workers know all too well how important it is to work safely around heavy machinery. Machinery can easily crush a person. Just one wrong move can cause injuries and even death. Unfortunately, a Pennsylvania man died from his injuries after getting caught between two cranes at a job site.
The fatal workplace accident occurred in Shady Grove, Pennsylvania, on the afternoon of Aug. 29. The man, an employee for Manitowoc Cranes, was working in a parking lot. He was standing between two cranes - one was parked and another employee was operating the other one. The latter one was moved too sharply, pinning the man between the two cranes.
An emergency response team was called to scene. They performed CPR on the man, but they could not revive him. He was pronounced dead at the accident scene.
An investigation should be performed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to determine how the workplace accident occurred. Why was the man standing between two heavy pieces of equipment?
Another reason why it would be a good idea to conduct an investigation would be to determine liability. Was the employee being careless by standing between the two cranes? Did a supervisor or someone else in charge order him to stand there? Were proper safety procedures being followed?
The family of the man should look into preserving their legal rights. Accidents do happen, even when the rules are followed. However, depending on the outcome of an investigation, this could potentially be a wrongful death case. It is possible that the employer could be at fault, and the man's family may be entitled to some sort of compensation.
