Independence Tube Corp paying $17,290 for violations

A man working for Independence Tube Corp was killed on the job back in October of 2015, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration came in after the incident to do an investigation. They found multiple safety violations and notable unsafe conditions. As a result, the company has to pay $17,290 and take steps to reduce the workplace hazards.

The man who was killed was struck by a 3-ton steel coil as it fell. He was from Hartselle, Alabama, and the incident happened in Decatur. However, Independence Tube Corp also has a pair of plants in Illinois.

According to reports, the man was part of team charged with slitting and banding larger pipes into narrower pieces. A cart had been made to hoist the tube, but the tube was not secured properly, according to OSHA. As such, it fell off of the hoist and hit the man.

The tubes that the company makes are steel, and they're used in lighting equipment, agricultural equipment and transportation equipment. The company does not produce that equipment itself, but merely sells the tubes to those manufacturers.

Since the incident, a spokesperson for the company did say that the way in which the man's job is done has been changed, presumably to keep other workers safe. On top of that, they are giving workers fall protection and putting guards on any of the horizontal shafts in the plant. They're also using guards on the chains and sprocket wheels.

Those who have lost loved ones in workplace accidents may be able to seek compensation for lost wages, medical bills and much more.
