The importance of reporting all work accidents

Illinois is home to a wide variety of industries, many of which pose serious injury risks to workers. Most residents would immediately agree that it is important to report a serious accident. Workers know that prompt and accurate reporting is a key factor in getting workers' compensation if the injury takes them out of the workplace. However, many workers choose not to report a minor work accident.

For the sake of this blog post, let us say that a minor work accident or injury could be something like a cut or a very minor muscle strain. In most cases, these injuries would not result in missing work so employees simply shrug it off and continue working. By not reporting, they are risking their workers' compensation benefits if the cut should become seriously infected or if a minor muscle strain should worsen.

Accurate reporting of work accidents is important for another reason as well. It helps keep your co-workers safe from injury. Here is an example: Say you trip over a damaged piece of flooring and fall but only suffer from a scrape or a bruise. If you report the incident, your employer can first post a caution about the flooring and then repair the damage. This means one of your co-workers or even yourself can avoid the hazard until it is repaired.

It takes a team to ensure workplace safety and you are just as important a member of this team as your employer is. We invite you to explore our web page dedicated to workers' compensation if you would like to learn more about the process of filing a claim.
