Tired teen drivers crash more often

Teen drivers are already one of the most high-risk groups simply because they have so little experience, but it turns out that a lack of sleep can make things even more dangerous. Tried teens are about 20 times more likely to crash within 24 months, according to one study.

That study did expand things a bit beyond the teenage years to look at young drivers in general, considering those between the ages of 17 and 24. The risks rose when they said they tended to get six hours of sleep per night—or fewer. Those who got over six were less likely to crash.

It's generally thought that people should try to get about eight hours of sleep every night, and this study seems to support that, showing that seven to eight hours could be much safer than five or six.

The study also found that there was a prime time for these accidents. They tended to happen at night, between eight in the evening and six in the morning. It's at this point that a person who only slept for six hours the night before really started to feel the impact.

To make sure the trend was true, researchers even adjusted things to look at risky behavior, age, the amount of hours being driven, and other such factors. They also looked at which drivers had an accident history. No matter how things were altered, they found that drivers were more likely to crash when they were tired.

While this isn't a shocking study, it does illustrate how even drivers who don't intend to do anything wrong can increase the danger on the roads, and those who are injured in accidents need to know what rights they have.
