1 killed and 2 badly injured in rainy accident

The Illinois State Police are reporting that one person died in a car accident on the Fourth of July, while two others were injured. The injured parties were both drivers in their respective cars, while the person who died was the passenger in one of the vehicles.

The crash happened at around 4:03 p.m., while it was raining heavily. A 19-year-old man was driving down Eden Road, right by Pearce Lane. He was behind the wheel of a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, and he was heading north. The passenger who was killed was in his car -- his or her name has not yet been given out by the authorities.

Perhaps due to the rain, the Cobalt driver spun out of control. The car entered the southbound lanes, spinning sideways, with the passenger side facing oncoming traffic. The car was then hit by a 2013 Volkwagon Passat that was being driven by a 25-year-old. All of these facts come from the preliminary investigation, though more information could come to light and charges are pending.

Both drivers are said to have injuries that are serious and life-threatening. An ambulance came to the scene and took them to Sparta Hospital, and then a helicopter transported them to Saint Louis University Hospital.

Police did note that all three were wearing seat belts. The cause, according to the police, is that the driver was going too fast for conditions in the heavy rain.

Agencies involved in the response included the Sparta Police Department, the Randolph County Sheriff's Department, MedStar EMS, and the Sparta Fire Department.

When people are killed in car accidents, the families of those individuals may still be able to seek compensation on their behalf. It's important to know how this process works and what can be claimed. Criminal charges do not ensure the outcome, but they can help support a civil case.
