Big risk factors for young drivers

You've probably heard the old cliche that teenage drivers are the most dangerous of any age group. One important thing to note about this is that the notion is so common and repeated so often because it's true. The highest crash rates are among young drivers, especially those who are teenagers and those who just got their driver's licenses.

There are a lot of factors that play into this, with the most important being a sheer lack of experience. As with any new skill, proficiency takes time. Teens are likely to make mistakes as they learn, mistakes which can lead to accidents.

Another risk is that teens often drive with friends in the car. Sometimes, this may be because one teen has his or her license and a car, while not all of the teen's friend group can make this same claim. Many adults have their own cars and just drive themselves everywhere, but teens may not, and a carload of young people can be quite distracting to a new driver.

Teens have also been shown to engage in riskier behavior. This could come in part from the lack of experience; until a crash, they may not realize just how dangerous their driving style is. Therefore, they've been seen to follow too close to other drivers, use their cell phones to text and talk while driving, drive at excessive speeds, and even drink and drive.

This isn't to say that adult drivers don't do the same thing, but these are common risk factors noted in teens. Those who are injured in accidents that these teens cause could face high medical costs, disability, rehab costs, and much more. As such, they must know how to seek financial compensation in Illinois to cover these costs.
