Does the color of a car change the odds of an accident?

You know that factors like speed and driver distraction massively change the odds of an accident. However, some people claim that the very color of your car can play a role, and that some colors are safer than other colors. Does science back this up, or is it just another rumor?

It depends who you ask. One study looked at accidents during the daylight hours, and it found that white cars were safer than black or gray cars. The odds of a wreck dropped by about 10 percent.

However, some experts have questioned the accuracy of this study. They point to other studies done with daytime running lights. These show that the odds of a crash go down just slightly, by about 3 to 5 percent, when people have lights on during the day. They may not need the lights to drive, but other drivers' eyes are still draw to them, even when the sun is shining.

While this may seem to support the color hypothesis by showing that more visible cars do crash less, these experts say it can't possibly be a 10 percent difference. They argue that the daytime running lights make the car more visible than any color, so, if they don't even change things by 10 percent, the car's color isn't likely to do so.

The key, then, may be to focus on the other known factors -- like the driver distraction and speed issues noted above -- that are definitely linked to accidents. Additionally, understand that nothing can prevent all car crashes. Know what rights you have to compensation if you're hit by another driver in Chicago.
