Road construction workers face serious hazards on each shift. This is especially true when they are working on a road that is already open. Construction companies must have suitable safety plans in place to help address these issues.
The planning for worker safety begins before the laborers ever report to the worksite. The company must study the plans to determine what steps can be taken to improve safety.
Barrier systems are important
One of the most important safety measures is the use of appropriate barriers. All too often, workers have to rely on flimsy cones to keep them safe around moving vehicles. This isn’t sufficient in many cases, such as around high-speed roads like interstates. Instead, companies should use concrete barriers or heavy barrels to help keep workers safe. The better the barrier, the less likely it is that workers will suffer from injuries.
Safety equipment is necessary
On top of the proper barriers, employees must have adequate safety equipment. This usually includes hardhats and reflective vests. Many companies also require steel-toed boots. Workers must be taught what equipment is necessary for which jobs so that they wear the correct items. For example, eye protection is necessary when welding but might not be required when setting cones.
Proper training is critical
Everyone who is on the job site must be properly trained. This is especially important for those who are operating heavy machinery. They should always have a spotter and pay close attention to others around them. Having training when someone first comes on board is necessary. However, companies should also have safety briefings before each shift and periodic safety refresher courses.
Injuries can change lives
The injuries that construction workers face are serious. They can include broken bones, brain damage, spinal cord injuries, and other catastrophic conditions. Because of this, any injured worker should receive prompt medical care. This can include being seen at an emergency room, urgent care, or physician’s office, depending on the severity.
A worker who is injured will likely need workers’ compensation benefits after the incident. This can cover the medical bills, as well as missed wages that come when a doctor determines the worker needs time off.
Wage replacement isn’t comprehensive because of limits set on how much a person can receive. This is noted as two-thirds of the person’s average salary. However, upper limits on the amount of the possible payments might cut that down if a person makes a considerable salary.
