Illinois Police Initiate Month-Long Crackdown On Unsafe Driving

The Chicago area is experiencing increased enforcement efforts this month as Illinois police take aim at unsafe driving behaviors. A number of police departments are unified in their efforts to enforce a variety of violations, including speeding, DUI, tailgating, lane violations, failing to wear seatbelts, and texting while driving.

The September campaign will focus on the Reagan Memorial Tollway and the Interstate 355 corridor. Also in focus is the Tri-State Tollway, which contains portions of Interstate 80 (I-80), I-294 and I-94. These areas were chosen because the campaign’s goal is to reduce accidents at interchanges and off ramps. The police are also looking for drivers who fail to slow down or change lanes when approaching a police, emergency or construction vehicle on the shoulder.

Most Dangerous Activity for Teenage Drivers: Nighttime Driving

A great deal of media attention has been focused on the dangers of texting and driving among teenage drivers, but according to a recently released study of highway fatalities, this is not the single biggest threat. Instead, the biggest identifiable danger for teenage drivers is nighttime driving.

According to the study conducted by the Texas Transportation Institute, nighttime driving is more likely to result in death for teenagers than drinking, speeding or failing to wear a seatbelt. Researchers attribute this increased danger to fatigue and inexperience, both of which are aggravated by driving after dark.

New Law Derails CTA Notice Requirement

On June 1, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed Senate Bill 84 into law, repealing the six-month notice requirement for victims of accidents involving the Chicago Transit Authority.
